Na Hale Makoa Workforce Housing Groundbreaking Ceremony in Waikoloa
On Tuesday, September 24, 2024, a significant milestone was reached in Waikoloa Village as the groundbreaking ceremony for Na Hale Makoa, a workforce housing development, was celebrated. Set on a 10-acre parcel leased from the County of Hawaii for 68 years, this project promises 109 units of affordable housing, including a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units.
A Vision for Sustainable Living
Na Hale Makoa is designed with the needs of Hawaii’s workforce in mind. With modern finishes, in-unit washers and dryers, and features such as a recreation center, picnic areas, and a keiki playground, the development integrates LEED best practices for energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Residents will benefit from thoughtfully designed living spaces that aim to provide comfort and modern amenities.
Key Remarks and Blessings
The event began with remarks from Collin Hoo, President, and Audrey Away, Executive Director of the Pacific Housing Assistance Corporation, the lead developer of the project. Hawaii County Mayor Mitch Roth and City Council Member Cindy Evans highlighted the crucial role of affordable housing for Waikoloa’s growing community. Dean Minakami, Executive Director of the Hawaii Housing Finance & Development Corporation, underscored the importance of collaboration between local, county, and state entities. Kumu Keala Ching led a traditional Hawaiian blessing, setting a hopeful tone for the development.
A Long-Awaited Milestone
The ceremony marked a pivotal point for a project that has been in planning since 2019. As the island’s workforce continues to grow and demographic shifts bring new challenges, Na Hale Makoa stands as a response to the need for sustainable and affordable housing.
